What do we learn in English and Mathematics?

  English

The aim of the English Curriculum is to enable all children to fully develop their ability to use and understand English. We believe that language skills are essential if a child is to access the full curriculum and so the teaching of English has prominence at North Farnborough Infant School. Speaking and listening, reading and writing should interact in the context of a wide-ranging and stimulating environment. The Foundation Stage Curriculum and The National Literacy Strategy are followed.

Mathematics

The aim of mathematics teaching is to provide individual children with effective mathematical skills, and confidence in using them. Mental work forms an important part of the maths sessions. Investigation work provides intellectual stimulation and discovery.  We ensure that our children have a thorough grounding in practical opportunities to develop their understanding of mathematical concepts prior to any formal recording taking place. Our aim is to develop numerate and confident children who are able to apply their knowledge logically. Daily mathematic sessions follow the Numeracy Strategy and include opportunities to develop the children's mental and oral strategies, to be involved in problem solving and investigations. ICT is used to support their learning. Work in mathematics can be linked with various other areas of the curriculum and is not seen as a subject in isolation.
