Summer 2008 ~ Year One Newsletter

 

Dear Parents

Welcome back ~ we hope that you had a lovely spring break. For the first half of this term our topic will be Castles and The Secret Garden. We will be learning about castles in the past and growing plants. After half term we will be learning about Katie Morag and Island life and creating our own Caribbean cocktails using exotic fruit. 

 

Castles

·         History – what was it like to live in a castle? What sorts of people lived in castles and

    what jobs did they have. We will also be doing follow up work to our visit to Windsor

    Castle

·         Literacy – We will be looking at non- fiction texts linked to castles and poetry

·         Numeracy - We will practising number bonds to 10 and 20. We will also be finding the difference between two numbers and revisiting shape both 2D and 3D.

 

The Secret garden

·         Science – we will be looking at plants that grow in our gardens, studying their life 

    cycles, investigating what plants need in order to grow, labelling the different parts of

    a plant and different sorts of plants.

·         Literacy – this will be linked to science, looking at non-fiction books to find out information about plants.  There will also be sessions with fiction books that have a ‘gardening’ theme.

·         Numeracy -we will be practising odd and even numbers, finding out the missing number in a number sentence, using money up to 20p, capacity, and finding half of a shape and making symmetrical patterns.

 

 

Island Life

·         Geography – studying the Isle of Struay using books, maps and the internet and comparing it with life in Farnborough.

·         Literacy – linked to Katie Morag stories (Isle of Struay).

·         Numeracy – counting in threes, using number facts to add and subtract ie adding 9 by adding 10 and subtracting 1, and time.

 

 

Caribbean Cocktail

·         Design and technology – design and make a cocktail using different fruits.

·         Literacy – linked to summer holidays looking at holiday brochures and postcards

·        Numeracy – adding more than two numbers, bridging through 20 with single digit numbers, continuing with time and capacity.

 

 

A reminder of things you might like to know!

·         PE days - Beech and Oak – Tuesdays and Wednesdays. 

·        Oak need their trainers for apparatus day on Tuesday. 

·         Beech need their trainers for apparatus day on Wednesday

·         Library day – Wednesday for Beech and Oak

·         School Trip – Windsor Castle – 14th May 2008
